Disjointed Manchester United pull their own trigger to give Watford much-needed win

That says plenty about United’s struggles. In matches like this, their lack of imagination and precision in attack prevents them from building up any momentum, or putting any sustained pressure on the opposition. “There was no intent or urgency to make us win the game,” said Solskjaer.

Their only chance of a dire first half fell to Jesse Lingard, who inexplicably tried to chip Ben Foster when clean through on goal. “I don’t think the chip was the right option,” said Solskjaer. “He knows he has to score,” said Harry Maguire.

Watford were hardly playing flowing football of their own, yet they were effective and hard-working. There was plenty of evidence here, with Ismaila Sarr and Troy Deeney both causing problems in attack, to suggest that survival is a more than realistic goal as they enter the second half of the campaign.

In those two attackers, and in Gerard Deulofeu, Pearson has three forwards capable of dragging Watford up the table. The key will be providing a platform for them to thrive. They did so here, with the likes of Will Hughes and Christian Kabasele putting in terrific shifts in midfield and defence respectively. “We were organised, we were disciplined,” said Pearson. “We have to sustain our positive intent and our ability to go into these types of games and perform.”

United were painfully sloppy in the first half, with Fred, Lingard and Marcus Rashford all guilty of wasting possession. Behind them, Scott McTominay kept it conservative rather than looking to use the speed of his attackers.

They were floundering in attack in these early sages, then, but at least they were looking relatively solid in defence. That all changed in the 50th minute, when De Gea allowed Sarr’s harmless effort through his gloves and into the back of the United net.

It came from a simple free-kick, delivered by Hughes, and there appeared to be little danger when Sarr’s be seen criticising aspects of Barcelona’s play in an exuberant manner as they were beaten by Real Madrid.”Obviously, moving to Barcelona is a big step and Eder knew it was because we’d spoken about it,” former Athletic Club striker Manu Sarabia tolshot bounced into the ground. De Gea, though, simply allowed it to spin through his fingers. The Spaniard fell to the floor, his face in his hands, in full knowledge that this goal was his responsibility and his alone. It meant that he had gone 13 successive Premier League appearances without keeping a clean sheet, the longest run in his career.

De Gea could do little about the second, scored by Deeney from the penalty spot just three minutes later. Again it was Sarr causing problems, surging between two United defenders before he was cleaned out by the sliding Wan-Bissaka. There could be no doubt about the decision and Deeney calmly struck his first goal of an injury-ravaged season.

Solskjaer soon turned to his bench, calling for Mason Greenwood and Paul Pogba, finally fit again after the ankle and illness problems that had restricted him to just six appearances this campaign. One of the Frenchman’s first contributions was to thud the ball directly into Fred’s face, although a bit of rustiness can perhaps be excused considering he has not featured since September. “When Paul came on, that was probably the only plus for us today,” said Solskjaer.

There were glimpses of goal for United, but nothing more. Maguire’s header wSouthampton manager Ralph Hasenhuttl. The Englishman held onto the number one jersey after featuring against Arsenal in February.”It didn’t start too well, as I wasn’t playing many games,” said Gunn.”When I signed, I kenham midfielder Harry Winks is angry over doubts regarding his fitness.Winks, 23, has already missed World Cup and Nations League tournaments and had to celebrate his Tottenham’s epic Champions League semi-final triumph against Ajax via FaceTime becnew it was going to be a fight beas saved by Foster, Greenwood lofted a bouncing effort over the top and Rashford’s low effort was too close to the Watford goalkeeper. Once again, United lacked both the self-belief and the quality to threaten a comeback.

How the Premier League got its mid-table back: a study of top-flight averageness

content_img

data-js=”article-body” data-insert-mobile-adslot>

But what does it mean to be a mid-table team in the billionaire era? As a tangible fatigue sets in with the short-termist boom/bust cycles of various clubs, has it become cool to be a mid-table side?

It’s possible you haven’t put much thought into this, so allow your correspondent to examine the cornerstones of midtabledom. It’s not just about being 10th or thereabouts, equidistant from the drop and the Europa League, with the half-hearted annual hopes of “a cup run”. Being mid-table is a state of mind, man, and here are the pillars of its philosophy.

Consistent inconsistency

This characteristic is historically the domain of Tottenham, who almost perfected the art of mid-table unpredictability in the mid-1990s and 2000s by flirting several times with a goal difference of precisely zero. They have finished with double figures for wins, draws and defeats in the same campaign no fewer than eight times in the 26 Premier League seasons. If anything, Clive, they almost mid-tabled too well.

Having long abandoned their policy of losing to Chelsea every time they meet, Daniel Levy’s Spurs have happily vacated their comfortable seat in the eye of the Premier League storm.

The pre-match punditry pondering of “which [Club X] are going to turn up today?!” now belongs to Watford – 13 managers in the last decade, somewhere north of 60 players signed in the space of five summers – whose list of results can be consulted at any time, safe in the knowledge that you will find a healthy number of Ds and Ls, seasoned evenly with some Ws.

Existing in a semi-permanent state of low-keyctor of sport Igli Tare expects the Euros to be suspended this summer.Serie A is currently suspended due to the coronavirus outbreak.“Italy is divided in two, in the north the situation is dramatic. In the centre and in the south we understand what chaos

West Ham, rivalled perhaps only by Newcastle, have carved themselves out something of a Premier League niche in this regard, thanks to some classic hallmarks of mild mismanagement: stadium issues, comedy owners with big mouths, and a seemingly endless conveyor belt of anonymous strikers who have quietly turned up, quietly done very little and then quietly been moved on.

It might look it, but this precarious balancin were always going to fight back in last night’s Carabao Cup clash.City defeated United 3-1 in the first-leg of their semifinal, having been 3-0 ahead before halftime.Walker, impressive for the 90 minutes, said: “The first half was great.”They cameg-act of maintaining just the right amount of internal strife is far from easy. Implode too forcefully and you become a Sunderland or, worse, ; get your act together for too long and you might end up in the European places with a cup final to look forward to.

Do not underestimate just how much effort goes into establishing oneself as a mid-table soap opera.

Lofty but unfulfilled ambitions

“Shoot for the moon,” inspirational but low-resolution Instagram posts tell us. “Even if you miss, you’ll land among the stars.”

Recent Premier League history is peppered with wide-eyed new club owners who have made the grave error of “eyeing Champions League football within five years”, only to find themselves a hundred million or so out of pocket as they remain embedded in the belly of the top flight. Such clubs – West Ham again, Everton too – will deliver the occasional eye-catching televised win under the floodlights, only to follow it up with an abject display of professional indifference the following Saturday afternoon.

Sandwiched between those two perennial Premier League optimists are Wolves, whose owners Fosun had serious ambitions of a top-six finish after capitalising on promotion from the Championship with some impressively bold signings. They are now 10th, with as many wins as defeats, neither a failure nor a sensation, and they’re in decent company.

Cautious, earnest realism

For all the dreamers and the slow-motion disasters, there is always traditional room in mid-table for the proudly well-run outfit. Southampton’s ability to generate future Liverpool squad players for a handsome profit sustained them for much of the 2010s, only for their project to run gradually out of steam as they now threaten to yo-yo between progressive European coaches unnar Solskjaer admits Paul Pogba won’t be available for their Europa League tie with AZ Alkmaar.United have already qualified for the knockout stages of the competition but must avoid defeat against AZ to ensure they win Group L.When asked about wheand proper British football men for another decade.

So, then, the mantle of Refusing To Get Carried Away has passed to Bournemouth, the long-term project of the thoroughly decent Eddie Howe, whose relentlessly measured takes, overwhelming sense of perspective and unruffleable feathers are all perfectly tailored for finishing anywhere between 8th and 13th for as long as he wants to stick around.

A solid recent tradition of averageness

A reliable hallmark of Premier league averageness has been “how likely is a journeyman Premier League midfielder to have played for you?”, to which the answer often involves Aston Villa. Their pitiful relegation to the Championship in 2016 tore at the very fabric of Premier League mediocrity, and what it now meant to be in the middle of its class.

Having completed their widely expected regression to the mean after their gloriously baffling Premier League triumph in 2015/16, Leicester City (six wins, six defeats, a tantalising goal difference of +1) may well be the Midlands’ new incumbent of mid-table mediocrity.

Let’s not forget that they have been a solid middling presence before. Back in the days of Martin O’Neill’s tracksuit tucked into his socks, as he gulped excitedly from a pitchside water bottle every eighteen seconds, Filbert Street’s looming camera angle, and a team with more centre-halves than you ever thought possible, Leicester strung together consecutive finishes of 9th, 10th, 10th, 8th and 13th. Those dubious glory days are surely back.

Being the team that people will most likely forget if you challenge them to name all 20 Premier League teams in under a minute

Derby, Charlton, Birmingham, Portsmouth, Wimbledon, Coventry – all, at some point, have been the hardy grist for the Premier League mill. Nothing wrong with that, and perhaps the purest essence of being a mid-table side is simply being the second-last game on the Match of the Day running order. This season, it is Brighton, and not even having players called Dunk and Bong is going to change that.

Just as the widening gulf in resources was threatening to turn the Premier League into a two-dimensional league of haves and have-nots, the top flight appears to have its middle class back. As the “Big Six” (formerly the “Big Four”, and certainly not to be confused with the original “Big Five” of the late 1980s) all try to squeeze themselves into the Champions League before the doors close in May, there is a lively, diverse, capable set of teams below them who aren’t being dragged into the relegation mire.

We might have traditionally dismissed it as mediocre, but it’s time to embrace the fleshy middle of our top flight – it’s the sign of a healthy division.

Jose Mourinho defends relationship with Paul Pogba… and insists only player he has fined is Anthony Martial

content_img

data-js=”article-body” data-insert-mobile-adslot>

“He never had a fight with me. We never had a warm (heated), a hard, I don’t know how you say, exchange of words. Everything is respected. I have no problems at all,” the United manager stated with photographs showing Pogba, and his team-mates, in high spirits at the club’s Carrington training ground ahead of Sunday’s Premier League fixture away to Brighton where they lost last season.

ogba answered Mourinho’s call to return to first-team action, after just three days training, following his post-World Cup holiday, for last Friday’s league match at home to Leicester City. It was after that game, however, that Pogba hinted at his unhappiness and said he could not go further for fear of being fined.

“You have to ask him. You have to ask him,” Mourinho said when asked what Pogba meant. “You know I’m here for two years and a couple of months and the only player that was fined was Anthony Martial, so is not easy to be fined here. So you have to ask him. I didn’t ask him, I’m not going to ask him. I repeat I want him to work the way he is doing and to play the way he is doing and, for me, that’s the only thing that matters.”

Asked about Pogba’s comments, when the player also referred to the need for “trust” and singled out the fans and team-mates – but not the manager – Mourinho said: “I don’t care. I don’t care. I repeat: I want him to play well, I want him to play for that team, I want him to play for the fans, and that is what he did. He’s woned terms to 2024.“I am very happy and very proud,” Masuaku said. “For me it was an easy decision.”The club wanted me to stay and so I didn’t even need to think about it – it was just a matter of time.”Now I am looking forward to the Premier Lerking extremely well here but I have to say in his defence that write what you want about him, write what you want about me, please don’t say lies, please don’t put him in a situation where people can think that he’s not a polite, educated guy, which he is.”

n the absence of the injured Antonio Valencia who, like Nemanja Matic returned to full training on Thursday, but is not expected to be included in the squad to face Brighton, Pogba was awarded the captaincy. The 25-year-old will retain it for Sunday’s game, for which Jesse Lingard could feature after recovering from a groin problem, and until Valencia returns.

“The truth is we are together for two years andng Hornets striker agreed a season-long loan move back to the League One club. He spent the second-half of last season with Wimbledon.Downes told the club website: “I am just really pleased to get Michael back and I’m looking forward to him joining a couple of weeks and I’ve never been so happy with him (Pogba) as I am now, that’s the truth,” Mourinho said. “I cannot demand more from him, I cannot ask more from him. He came here on a Monday (last week), trained three days, I asked for his support for his contribution in an important match for us when the team had difficulties, he did it, he did it better and for more time than we could expect.

“When he says he did it for the fans and for the team is exactly what I want, is exactly what I demand from my players, he’s giving me, he’s working well, playing well, he does for the fans, he does for the team and that’s what I want, to play for the team which he is doing and I repeat couldn’t be happier than what I am.”

ourinho is understood to have been surprised at Pogba’s comments especially as he believes he offered an ‘olive branch’ by making him captain. He was also angered by claims that he had had a bust-up with Pogba and had told him he could leave United if he wanted to.

Nevertheless Mourinho is certainly aware of the French international’s feelings with sources close to the player, who was dropped last season at times, suggesting he was unhappy with some of the criticism levelled at him by the manager over the summer. During the US tour Mourinho said Pogba’s form had improved during the World Cup because he was free of distractions and fully focussed on football.

Mourinho is also acutely icker says United are one of several clubs interested in signing Kabak from Stuttgart this summer.United, along with Schalke, Monaco, Bayern Munich, West Ham United and AC Milan are all keen on the 19-year-old Turkish centre-back.Kabak’s release clauaware the machinations to try and manoeuvre a move to Barcelona for Pogba who are playing a longer game in trying to make the transfer eventually happen.

Mourinho also confirmed that Matteo Darmian will stay at United with the club believing the Italian can provide back-up for either full-back position.

Stevie questionable for Sunday

content_img

The Bills athletic training staff along with head coach Chan Gailey made the decision to hold Stevie Johnson out of practice on Thursday as his groin was tight and a bit uncomfortable following Wednesday’s practice. The decision might very well prove to have been a wise one.

Johnson was still a limited participant, but did ntheir Europa League round 16 tie with Inter Milan at a neutral venue. It was not played this week as it has been postponed by UEFA due to the coronavirus and the solution could be to play a one-off match at a neutral site. That’s the view of Villaverdeot miss a ster City are following Guctekin. It was revealed in 2017 by Fenerbahce board member Mahmut Uslu that City had made a €5m bid for the talented midfielder but it was rejected. Now, the 20-year-old ‘wants to leave’ the club after a poor season and Citysingle period of Friday’s practice session.

“I did everything,” said Johnson. “Everything that consists of a practice, I was out there running routes and full go with the guys.”

“We’ve got Stevie listed as questionable, but he went out and did all that we wanted him to do today and we’re going to take another long look Sunday morning and make a decision.”

The Bills top wideout in hindsight was glad the staff made him sit Thursday.

“I think coach made the right call along with the guys in the training room with sitting me (Thursday),” said Johnson. “I guess it will only get better from here and we’ve still got only a couple of days until game day. I think it’ll be alright.”

“It helped a lot by doing that and we think another 48 hours will help a lot,” said Gailey. “I feel good about it, but you don’t know.”

Johnson maintains that his groin is healthy after having surgery this past spring, but he found it difficult to describe just what the problem is.

“It is taken care of,” he said. “It’s not a huge issue. I don’t feel mentally that it’s a huge issue. I think it’s something from talking to other players they’ve had the same situation where something may occur and then they’re back steady again. That’s what I believe it is so I was back out there running around.”

Still, Johnson said he’ll be spending a lot of time in the training room the next two days getting treatment. He insists it’s just a proactive approach to keep his groin from keeping him off the field.

“I think it’ll be something that I’ll be taking care of for the rest of the regular season just in case something pops up again,” he said. “It’s about staying in the train the start of the season.Klopp has confirmed Shaqiri will not be involved “for a while” after tearing his calf while on Switzerland duty at the UEFA Nations League.Klopp has revealed that he faces a race against time to be fit for the start of the caing room for my body.”

Buffalo’s number one passing target feels his groin problem is mostly mental, but he’s confident his mind will be free and clear and focused on the game plan Sunday.

“It has to be,” he said. “It’s a big game. Week 1 it’s a division opponent. It’s the Jets. I definitely won’t be thinking about anything else besides trying to beat whoever is in front of me and win the game.”

Comeback Game anniversary welcomes back two Colts coaches

It’s a day that will mark the end of the season for the 2009 Bills, and the beginning of the second season for the , but Jan. 3 also holds a special place in Bills history. Today marks the 17th anniversary of the ‘Comeback Game’ when the Buffalo Bills overcame a 35-3 third quarter deficit in the AFC Wild Card game against the Houston Oilers to win 41-38 in overtime.

Two former Bills who played in that game and are now coaching for the Colts will be spending pre-game warm-ups on the same field where they were instrumental in orchestrating the greatest comeback in NFL history.

Indianapolis quarterbacks coach Frank Reich and assistant offensive line coach Pete Metzelaars admit it is a bit unique that they return as coaches on the 17th anniversary of a game that typified the resilience of the early 90’s Bills teams that went to four straight Super Bowls.

“It’s just fun to be coming into town on the anniversary of the ‘Comeback Game’ no question about that,” said Reich.

“It will be special remembering that and to be out there on the same day it happened,” said Metzelaars. “It’s one of the most memorable games of my career and one of the most memorable games in Bills history I think.”

Both Reich and Metzelaars are up in the coach’s booth during games, but as prepared as they’ll be for their game against the Bills Sunday they don’t deny that the old memories will get stirred up walking around Ralph Wilson Stadium.

“I had the catch that started the whole comeback,” chuckled Metzelaars, who finished the game with three catches for 43 yards. “I ran a corner route and Frank threw it to me and a linebacker dropped underneath me and the ball went right through his hands.

“At that time we were down 35-3 and if he intercepted that pass I don’t think we ever would’ve come back. But it went through his hands, and I caught it and ran down the field a little bit and we went down and scored the first touchdown. And things kind of rolled from there.”

Metzelaars catch led to a one-yard touchdown run by Kenny Davis to make the score 35-10 with eight minutes left in the third quarter, but it never should have happened. Oilers LB Eddie Robinson should have been running the other way with the football.

“You look at that pass and whenever I see the highlight of that pass I think that things were going our way at that time because there’s no way that ball should have been completed,” said Reich, who was a primary architect of the comeback with 289 yards passing and four touchdowns. “Pete was a huge part of that team and that’s why it’s fun that we’re coaching on the same team and will be able to go back together.”

Reich and Metzelaars had parallel careers with the Bills spending all 10 of their seasons in Buffalo together (1985-1994). And as proud as they might be of the resilience they displayed in the ‘Comeback Game’ it’s not the nce the start of the season after suffering anterior cruciate ligament damage to his right knee in the Community Shield against Liverpool. The winger has stepped up his recovery, training alone and doing ball work, and is expected to join his team-matonly part of their Buffalo careers that they’ll be recalling on the anniversary of that historic contest.

“When I first walk out there I’ll think about some good times, not just the ‘Comeback Game,'” said Reich. “Truthfully when I st weeks as a Premier League player.Speaking to the Irish Times, Egan reflected on the step up that he and his Sheffield United teammates have made.He said, “You’re playing against top teams every week, so you’re being asked different questions and cgo in the stadium what I think of is more of the everyday things, like being at practice and the things I did in the community there and the teammates and friends and fans. There is a little bit of remembering this game or that play, but for me it’s more about remembering the whole experience than just one game.”

Nevertheless Jan. 3, 1993 is a hard memory to top especially when one is fortunate enough to return to very field where it all happened on the very same day. And arguably no game better demonstrated the resilience of those Buffalo teams of the early 90’s than the Wild Card victory over Houston.

“It kind of is that defining game,” said Metzelaars. “That no matter what, even in the darkest hours if you keep battling and keep fighting you don’t know what can happen. We faced adversity and ups and downs and persevered most times, and unfortunately there were a few times that we didn’t.”

Metzelaars and Reich have a chance to make good as coaches what they could not achieve as players as they help to prepare a Colts team looking to return to the Super Bowl for the second time in five years.

“I’m thankful for those memories and those opportunities and I’m not going to try to push them out of my mind,” said Reich of his playing days. “So it’s just a balance of learning from and appreciating the past, and moving on and exciting times are ahead for me right now. We’re going to the playoffs as a number one seed with a great football team and I have an opportunity to win a Super Bowl, which would exceed the ‘Comeback Game.'”

Whether another Super Bowl awaits the two former Bills players is a mystery at this point. What is certain is Jan. 3, 1993 is going to be a memory that remains vivid even when the time that has passed since that day becomes far longer than 17 years.

“In some ways it feels like it was yesterday,” Reich said. “In other ways it feels like it was 100 years ago. It’s kind of funny how you can feel both of those things. The sound of the stadium and the volume of the stadium and the crazy fans, I can almost feel it as I speak. Then in other ways like it was so long ago that it almost wasn’t real. It’s hard to believe it’s been that many years.”

Tennessee hires Georgia offensive coordinator Jim Chaney to same position

Tennessee made the hire official on Wednesday.

“What most impresses me about Jim is his knowledge of the game and also thepersonal terms with Everton to take the manager’s job.The Mirror says Everton have competed their audacious swoop for Ancelotti after the Italian agreed to become their new manager.Ancelotti is expected on Merseyside in the next 24 hours and will be way he has adapted his offenses to his players’ strengths,” Tennessee coach Jeremy Pruitt said in a statement. “He’s had years where he has guided one of the nation’s top passing offenses and and years where his offenses have been near the top in rushing. He could coach every positioSean Longstaff’s attitude when benching him for defeat at Norwich City.Bruce was certainly impressed by Longstaff’s response when he came oyed down injury concerns after their 2-1 defeat of Tottenham.Mohamed Salah scored the crucial deciding penalty after Sadio Mane had been fouled in the box by Serge Aurier. But the Egyptian’s afternoon came to an abrupt end not long after when he was tn at Norwich and the midfielder is line to start against Spurs on Sunday.”I think, with all of that, is that usn on offense and is a true teacher of the game.

“Jim has proven to be a great mentor for young men, and I’m excited to have him here at Tennessee.”

has been without an offensive coordinator since Tyson Helton took the Western Kentucky job on Nov. 27, but that long wait resulted in coach Jeremy Pruitt poaching a familiar face from an intra-division rival. , offensive coordinator Jim Chaney will take over in the same capacity with the Volunteers after spending three seasons with the Bulldogs.

Chaney previously served as the Vols’ offensive coordinator during Lane Kiffin’s lone season in 2009, and he stayed on for the next three seasons under Derek Dooley. He also served as the interim coach of the Vols for the final game of the 2012 season, topping Kentucky 37-17.

Chaney’s work at Georgia is a big reason why the Bulldogs have emerged as a force in the SEC East. Under his guidance, then-true freshman quarterback stepped in for in the first quarter of the first game of the 2017 season, threw 24 touchdowns, won the SEC title and lost in overtime in the Playoff National Championship. His offense finished third in the SEC in yards per play in 2017 with 6.70 and scoring offense at 35.4 yards per game.

It was much of the same in 2018 for Chaney’s Bulldogs. They finished second in the conference with 37.9 points per game and third with 7.05 yards per play, en route to another SEC East title and New Year’s Six bowl.

Chaney will take over a Tennessee offense that struggled to find consistency under Helton. The Vols finished last in the league in rushing offense (129.08 yards per game), 13th in scoring offense (22.8 points per game) and 13th in yards per play (5.46). Quarterback only threw three interceptions, but his 12 touchdowns and 140.98 passer rating leave plenty to be desired. He did show flashes of brilliance, though, most notably his 328-yard, two-touchdown performance in a win at Auburn on Oct. 13.

Former Clemson QB Hunter Johnson transfers to Northwestern: Three things to know

likely has its replacement for rising senior quarterback once he moves on after the 2018 seas Champions League clash with Liverpool is the biggest game of his career.Haaland is one of Manchester United’s top targets ahead of the January transfer window, but he insists his total focus is on Liverpool.”I’m just focused on my job: playing footbon, and it’s somebody who could be a huge difference-maker. Former quarterback — a five-star prospect from the class of 2017 — is transferring to Evanston and will play for the Wildcats.

“I’m thrilled to be a part of the Wildcat family,” Johnson said in a release from the school. “The program that Col midfielder Santi Cazorla admits a move to MLS would be attractive. The former Arsenal star has rebuilt his career with Villarreal in the past year, culminating in a recall to the Spain squad. At 34, Cazorla is eager to make up for lost time after twoach Fitzgerald and his staff have built at Northwestern is phenomenal, and one my family has had the opportunity to get to know and trust. I am thankful to coach [Dabo] Swinney and the Clemson family for all their support over the past year-aed boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is weighing up the futures of Jesse Lingard and Andreas Pereira. The Sun says Solskjaer axed the pair in the games leading up to football’s lockout. He believed they needed a break after their displays were heavily scrutinind-a-half. My focus now is on doing everything in my power to help this team prepare to compete for a Big Ten West title. Go ‘Cats!”

How big is this for the Wildcats and what kind of impact can Johnson make? Here are three things to know:

Northwestern has seen some great quarterbacks come through the program since Fitzgerald took over as its coach in 2006, including Thorson, Mike Kafka and Trevor Siemian, but none of them compare to Johnson from a recruiting perspective.

Johnson was ranked No. 2 nationally among pro-style passers in his class, No. 30 overall regardless of position and is the only five-star prospect of the talented group of quarterbacks Fitzgerald has coached in Evanston. He earned an invitation to the Elite 11 camp in the summer of 2016, and was the MVP of the 2017 U.S. Army All-American Game.

He threw for 6,657 yards and 69 touchdowns over his four seasons at Brownsburg High School, and added 727 rushing yards and seven touchdowns.

Johnson didn’t come in for Clemson quarterback when Bryant got injured in the loss at in 2017. did. But don’t let that fool you, Johnson isn’t walking into this totally blind when he’s eligible in 2019.

He appeared in seven games for the Tigers as a true freshman, completing 21-of-27 passes for 234 yards and one touchdown. He completed all five of his passes and tossed a touchdown in a 28-14 win over in October, and went 7-of-8 for 144 yards against The Citadel in November. That earned him the No. 2 spot going into the rivalry game against .

“Just based on (The Citadel) game, Hunter graded better and played better,” Swinney said, . “Really proud of him and his development because he’s worked really hard. He’s made a lot of progress. That’s the thing you love to see because sometimes you’re just getting practice opportunity to see guys improve. Zerrick has done a phenomenal job for us. We see them everyday, every practice, every meeting. At the end of the day, you have to take that to the field. I think last week Hunter played better.”

He wasn’t Bryant’s primary backup in 2017 early, but he kept fighting and earned the role late for a team that made the Playoff for the third straight year.

Evanston, Illinois, is just under 200 miles from Johnson’s hometown of Brownsburg, which isn’t exactly an easy trip. But for Johnson, it could be a familiar one.

Johnson’s older brother Cole was a safety for the program from 2013-16, serving primarily as a scout team player for Fitzgerald. While Northwestern wasn’t a factor in the younger Johnson’s recruitment coming out of high school, his brother’s time there likely helped Fitzgerald understand his family and what Hunter brings to the program.

“We are ecstatic to add a player of Hunter’s caliber and character to our program,” Fitzgerald said in the statement. “He comes from an outstanding family, one we’ve had the opportunity to know for many years, and he will fit right in to the culture we continue to build here in Evanston. I’m excited for the opportunity to be his coach and look forward to him joining our football family on campus this month.”

College football scores, schedule 2017: USC stands tall, Notre Dame rolls

The final full month of the 2017 season is setting up to be a November to remember — starting this week with a slate that featured plenty of upsets and exciting finishes throughout the FBS landscape. CBS Sports was with you the entire way on Saturday, updating this post with the latest scores, news and highlights from the day’s games.

Week 10 scores

 42,  27 –  24,  10 –    27,  24 —  38,  31 —  24,  21 –  62,  52 –   24,  10  – Miami 28,  10 –  49,  35 –

Check these out …Projected Top 25: Week 10 recap: Stemming the Tide? Domination: Ruh-roh: WATCH: Sparty yes! Good job: It’s a blizzard! USC dominates Arizona

The Trojans are out of the national title picture, but putting an end to the show is the consolation prize on Saturday night. The USC defense did a good job holding the most electric player in in check through one half of football. The Arizona dual-threat quarterback had just 36 yards passing, 19 yards rushing as his team trailed the Trojans 21-6 at the break. But Tate woke up in the second half with two touchdown passes and another on the ground, and the Wildcats roared back to tie the Trojans at 35 midway through the fourth in a game that was dripping with “Pac-12 After Dark” storylines.

But on the heels of a 194-yard, three-touchdown performance by tailback Ronald Jones, the Trojans distanced themselves late thanks in part to two Tate picks to take it 49-35 and assert themselves as Pac-12 South front-runners heading into the stretch run.

rolls

No. 12 Washington has a loss to on its resume, but that doesn’t have an impact on its Pac-12 North destiny. That destiny, at least Saturday night, included a dominating win over previous division power . has two touchdown passes, has topped the 100-yard mark and scored once, broke the NCAA punt return for touchdown mark with the ninth of his career and the defense looks like it’s normal, suffocating self.

The Huskies rolled over the Ducks in Seattle 38-3, and — as the only one-loss team in the Pac-12 — keep hanging around a College Football Playoff race that once seemed like it disappeared in the warm Tempe night two weeks ago.

fends off upset-minded

Same story, different week as Texas’ defense did enough to win the game for a while, but the offense is found points hard to come by. TCU took a 17-0 lead before the Longhorns got a touchdown to bring the deficit to 10. However, Texas wasn’t been able to do much else and the Horned Frogs held on 24-7 despite modest success with the offense. Still, that marks four straight wins by TCU over the Longhorns.

Miami makes a statement against Virginia Tech

It wasn’t quarterback ‘s best game for Miami, but it hasn’t mattered. Miami leads Virginia Tech 28-10 in large part because of its defense. The Hokies averaged about four yards per play, had four turnovers and wweren’t able to capitalize on Rosier’s mistakes. The Hurricanes have played it close to the edge often this season, but this was a statement win anchored by its defense. The Week 11 game against is going to be a blast.

giving a game in shootout

UCF, the highest-ranked Group of Five team, needed to be careful against SMU on the road and the Mustangs are proving to be tough competition. Though the Knights lead 31-24, its the Mustangs’ defense that came up big with a pick-six in the second quarter. The defense is going to have to make a few plays like that to slow college football’s top scoring offense.

Notre Dame cruises past

In revealed that he always played as a centre forward as a child and despite playing a lot of his football for United on the left flank, he wants to continue through the middle. The Frenchman views the position as vital to his ambition to score more goala Saturday with its fair share of chaos, Notre Dame is doing an excellent job of maintaining its position in the top four. had having a big day for the Irish, as he’s accounted for nearly 400 total yards and three touchdowns as the Irish beat Wake Forest 48-37.

Oklahoma, Oklahoma State playing real-life video game

You know how the game is really easy when you play Madden — or when you used to play NCAA — on Rookie settings? Like, every single play you run is a touchdown because the CPU’s defense is just flailing about helplessly. Well, that’s what Bedlam was like. Oklahoma and Oklahoma State took turns running up and down the field without touching one another with Oklahoma outlasting their in-state rivals 62-52. , asserting himself as the Heisman leader, had 598 yards passing and six total touchdowns.

Northern Arizona quarterback gets ejected with a targeting penalty

Yes, you read that correctly. A quarterback — as in the primary player who handles the ball on each offensive snap — was ejected for targeting. The penalty happened during Northern Arizona’s game against Montana when Lumberjacks quarterback laid out a block on a reverse. Cookus went high on the hit, which is probably why he was ejected. But it’s still stunning to see the refs make that call.

Iowa crushes Ohio State’s playoff hopes

The College Football Playoff picture is about to look a lot different. While I don’t think anybody would have been too surprised to see Iowa beat Ohio State — especially if they saw what happened when Penn State came to Iowa City earlier this season — I don’t think anybody had Iowa winning this game 55-24. Yes, that’s right, 55-24. Iowa — Iowa! — scored 55 points in a game against Ohio State, destroying the Buckeyes’ playoff hopes.

Michigan State knocks off Penn State

Michigan State handed Penn State its second consecutive loss on Saturday. The Spartans beat Penn State 27-24, winning the game with a 34-yard field goal on the final play off the game. This game took a while to finish, as there was a weather delay of over three hours in the first half due to lightning storms in the area.

Clemson hangs on to beat NC State

The Tigers actually trailed NC State by four points at halftime, but out-played the Wolfpack in the second half to build a lead. A lead they nearly blew, as the Wolfpack had a chance to tie the game late, but had a key fourth down conversion called back on an illegal shift penalty. ‘s 89-yard touchdown run provided a nice cushion for the Tigers, and they needed it.

falls to

Iowa State’s magical run came to an end in Morgantown. The Cyclones managed to stage a comeback effort in the second half, but in the end West Virginia’s 20-point lead was too much to overcome as the Mountaineers ford striker Dodi Lukebakio is certainly not short of confidence. The striker excelled on loan at Fortuna Dusseldorf last season and is now wanted by a raft of clubs, including Lille. And the 21-year-old Belgian has announced his own price-tag.”Why wouwon 20-16. led the way for the ‘Eers, completing 20 of his 25 passes for 316 yards and two touchdowns.

Texas A&M’s November woes in full force

If this is indeed the end for Texas A&M coach Kevin Sumlin, his final games will have followed his script to a T. The Aggies’ 42-27 loss to Auburn drops the Aggies to 3-3 in SEC play. Sumlin is now 7-10 since 2013 in the month of November, and with games at Ole Miss and LSU remaining, A&M could very well fail to finish higher than .500 in conference once again. That’s the reasonable benchmark Sumlin needed to reach to keep his job. Anything less than a nine-win regular-season was probably going to cost him his job anyway.

follows the bouncing ball

Vanderbilt finished off a feisty Western Kentucky team in Nashville, and the Commodores got a big break late in the second quarter to take a lead heading into halftime. Quarterback unleashed a pass over the middle to in coverage, and it was deflected befy when abused by his own fans.Mustafi discussed the situation in a column with arsenal.com.He said, “It gets a little bit frustrating to read those comments but at the end of the day, you have to be professional and I tried to be as professional as Iore falling into the waiting arms of for a Shurmur’s second touchdown pass of the day.

 took it to

Apparently firing your coach and naming a new starting quarterback cannot solve all your problems. Missouri took advantage of a sinking opponent and jumped out to a 28-6 halftime lead on Florida before finishing things off with a 45-16 final. Honestly, the game didn’t even feel that close. This marks the first time in program history that the Gators allowed 42 points in consecutive games. Maybe Jim McElwain wasn’t the problem. Or maybe he was and this team is also bad. Probably both.

takes care of

There had been some talk about whether or not the CFP Selection Committee was underrating Wisconsin a bit too much by putting it at No. 9, but all the Badgers could do is take care of business against a winnable schedule. And although Indiana got an 10-0 lead on the Badgers in Bloomington, Wisconsin rallied back to 45-17 win, outscoring the Hoosiers 45-7 in the process. Running back Jonathan Taylor looked healthy with 183 yards and a touchdown and the defense shut down the Indiana offense. On to Iowa for the Badgers.

will look good today

Tulane already has the best logo in college football, and on Saturday it’s adding another excellent helmet to its arsenal. Unfortunately for the Green Wave, their looks didn’t translate into a win against . If Tulane ever manages to play as well as it looks, it’s going to win national titles.

Ethics office rules UConn coach Randy Edsall violated nepotism laws by hiring son

The Connecticut state ethics office has found that coach Randy Edsall violated state nepotism laws when he hired his son, Corey Edsall, to an assistant position on the coaching staff. A draft ruling has determined that Edsall helping negotiate his son’s contract, which is for $95,000, is at the heart of the matter.

Per the , however, the ethics office is recommending that the ethics board take no action againstbject derby display at Liverpool in the FA Cup, the new Blues boss revealed he was ready to deliver some home truths to his side. But he said on Friday, “There was absolutely no argument on the training ground or in the dressing room. No, absolutely Randy Edsall or UConn because of the proximity to the upcoming football season, calling any sort of move a “potential disruption.” Instead, the younger Edsall will be able to keep his job at the same salary for a year so long as the contract is not renewed.

UConn has said that it “respectfully disagrees” with the conclusion, arguing that Randy Edsall wats Liverpool.Marsch has admitted his side showed Liverpool “too much respect” in their 4-3 defeat at Anfield. He said: “We did have too much respect for them in the first half, that is for sure, but the whole world watches this team play.”I said on Asn’t a state employee when he became involved in his son’s contract and that he would not be a direct supervisor for his son.
